Artistic Possibilities | Prints
From 4th November 2022 to 1st April 2023 my exhibition Artistic Possibilities is running in the Upper Room of Talbot House, Poperinge. The exhibition tells the story of the relationship between the Queen’s Westminster Rifles and the Old House from the December of 1915 onwards. Here are a selection of the illustrations available as limited edition prints.
Luxuries Before Necessities
Men of the QWR scrounge a piano from somewhere in Poperinge for Talbot House before they have even managed to get crockery.
The Inimitable Westminster Touch
Following the opening of Talbot House and the Christmas festivities the QWR are called in to action to defend the Potijze road. Some of them wear their paper hats from their crackers, and one takes the water pistol he won in a cracker and fills it in a nearby shell hole.
A Cross in Potijze
A Tommy of the Westminsters takes a moment with an old friend at the regimental burial ground in Potijze.
A Connection Never Wholly Lost
Two members of the battalion from later in the war are given communion by Tubby from a wafer box given in memory of Rifleman Newton Gammon earlier in the war. This wafer box can still be seen in the Talbot House museum.
The Tradition of the Regiment
A misunderstanding between the forces that be and L/Cpl Bert Stagg. He had been helping at Talbot House during his convalescence after being wounded on the Somme when, by surprise, he was declared fit and returned to the Regiment. The Commanding Officer was less than impressed, believing that Stagg had been dismissed and brought the reputation of the Westminsters in to disrepute. Thankfully Tubby cleared up the matter and the cloud hanging over Stagg was removed.
